Wales boss Craig Bellamy has strengthened his coaching team with the appointments of former captain Ashley Williams and defender-turned-coach Paul Sheehan, a move designed to inject fresh perspective following the departure of two key assistants.
The arrivals come at a pivotal moment for the national side, which recently failed to qualify for the World Cup and faces high-stakes UEFA Nations League A matches against Portugal and Denmark. Williams’ return was viewed as somewhat unexpected given his long-standing role as a pundit on BBC’s Match of the Day, while Sheehan enters the camp after being out of management since his dismissal by Swansea City in November 2025.
They replace James Rowberry, who has chosen to continue his collaboration with Mark Robins at Stoke City, and Piet Cremers. Cremers, whose analytical contributions Bellamy had praised as essential, left in July to join Belgium’s Club NXT. Despite Cremers’ exit, Bellamy emphasized that he had already begun integrating those responsibilities himself.
“I loved this summer interviewing people, seeing who could add to us,” said the 47-year-old manager. “It freshens you up, gives you a different eye. Different strengths coming in means a different dynamic to how you work, which leaves me quite excited.” Former Wales midfielder Andrew Crofts, now an assistant at Tottenham, remains part of the setup.
Williams is widely regarded by Bellamy as the nation’s greatest captain, bringing immense experience and leadership to a young squad. Euro 2016 teammate Sam Vokes highlighted Williams’ ability to command respect within the dressing room, noting his history of leading by example in tough away environments.
Bellamy agreed, citing Williams’ high football IQ and his value as a sounding board. “Some ex-players with a certain presence can really add something, but also his knowledge of the game is really high,” Bellamy explained. “It’s nice for me to be able to ask ‘What would you see with this? If you played there, how did you feel when I asked you to do that?'”
FAW chief football officer Dave Adams pointed out that Williams’ expertise is particularly vital for the physical demands of Nations League A games. “He’ll bring some unique skills, particularly when you have to defend a lot,” Adams said on the Feast of Football podcast. “Some of the dark arts of defending, he’ll bring some interesting things for the players to think about.”
Sheehan’s inclusion signals a targeted focus on set-pieces, an area identified as critical for success in tightly contested matches. The 40-year-old previously managed set-piece duties at Luton and Southampton. Adams noted the importance of optimizing both attacking and defensive restarts during the upcoming six-game stretch.
While Bellamy anticipates healthy challenges to his tactical thinking from his new coaches, he stressed that the managerial message remains his own. The appointments reflect a strategic effort to shore up Wales’ defense and improve their chances in difficult away fixtures against top-tier European opposition.”
