To utilize these features, users must ensure their iPhones are running iOS 26.4 or later. Additionally, all relevant AI applications should be updated to their latest versions via the App Store. The interface prioritizes safety by restricting interaction to voice commands only, although most apps allow users to resume existing conversations initiated on other devices.
Among the supported applications, ChatGPT is prominently featured as CarPlay-ready. Other notable options include Meta AI, xAI’s Grok, and Anthropic’s Claude. For users who have upgraded to iOS 27, Siri AI is also an option, though it requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer model to access Apple Intelligence capabilities.
Accessing these tools is straightforward: after connecting the iPhone to the vehicle, users can tap the chatbot icon on the CarPlay home screen and select “New Voice Chat.” Newly compatible apps typically appear at the end of the home screen layout. Drivers can customize their CarPlay display by navigating to Settings, selecting General, choosing CarPlay, and then Apps to rearrange or remove icons for easier access.
Despite the convenience, there are significant limitations. Unlike Siri, these third-party chatbots cannot be activated via wake words, requiring manual app opening. They also lack the ability to control vehicle functions or other apps. Furthermore, their performance is heavily dependent on microphone quality; excessive noise may hinder voice recognition. Drivers are advised to close windows or use the apps while parked to mitigate connectivity and audio issues.
Navigation remains a key constraint, as these chatbots do not have access to real-time location data or mapping services. While users can request suggestions for destinations, they cannot receive turn-by-turn directions, with the exception of Siri AI, which integrates with Apple Maps. A stable internet connection is also essential, as weak or absent signals will prevent the apps from functioning while driving.

I tried Grok on my iPhone 14 and it just lagged terribly. Probably needs a newer device for smooth use.
