Letters: Support needed for workers near pension age

A former advice worker has called for specific support for individuals who lose their jobs as they approach state pension age. Peter Wade, now in his 61st year, revealed that he has been unemployed for over two years and has ceased applying for work, noting that the experiences of older job seekers are often overlooked.

Wade spent the majority of his career providing guidance on debt, housing, and energy issues. He recalled assisting a client in her late 50s who worked as a hospital cleaner. Due to changes in the women’s state pension age, the woman faced several additional years of working before she could retire. However, she was no longer physically capable of performing cleaning duties and found the prospect of starting a new career while managing her health to be overwhelming.

At the time, Wade viewed her situation from the perspective of an advisor. Now, finding himself in a similar position, his viewpoint has shifted significantly. His comments follow a recent report detailing the difficulties faced by people over 50 in the current job market.
