Welsh Regions Target Experience and Leadership for 2026-27 Campaign

Wales’ professional rugby regions have engaged in one of their most active recruitment periods in recent years, aiming to stabilize squads ahead of the 2026-27 season. While high-profile departures such as Jac Morgan, Dewi Lake, Aaron Wainwright, and Marnus van der Merwe have left voids, the four clubs have prioritized acquiring experienced players to mentor younger homegrown talent.

This strategic pivot comes against a backdrop of structural uncertainty, with the Welsh Rugby Union committed to reducing the number of regional teams from four to three. However, Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys, and Scarlets have all agreed to a new participation agreement that includes increased annual funding, allowing them to pursue significant additions.

Tom Rogers Joins Ospreys

Ospreys have secured the services of Tom Rogers, who arrives from Scarlets after making more than 70 appearances for his former club. Rogers holds a unique place in history as the first Wales player to score three tries in a single match against New Zealand, a feat he achieved playing on the wing last November.

Despite his success at number 11, the 27-year-old has transitioned to full-back at St Helen’s, seeking to challenge for the number 15 jersey following the departure of Jack Walsh. Head coach Mark Jones described Rogers as a versatile “Swiss Army Knife” who is equally effective on the wing or at full-back, expressing confidence that he will integrate quickly into the squad.

Gareth Anscombe Returns to Wales

The Scarlets have brought back Gareth Anscombe, who previously played for both Cardiff and Ospreys. The 35-year-old fly-half brings extensive international experience, including 37 Test caps and participation in two World Cups. His primary role is to provide competition for playmaker Sam Costelow, allowing Joe Hawkins to remain at inside centre, while also supporting the development of teenager Carwyn Leggatt-Jones.

Anscombe’s fitness has been a concern after a knee injury in 2019 limited him to just five club appearances last season with Bayonne. He is only the second time he has reached double figures in a single club season since the injury. Speaking on the Scrum V podcast, Anscombe emphasized his desire to support younger players and pass on his knowledge.

Scott Sio Bolsters Cardiff’s Set-Piece

Cardiff Blues have addressed concerns about their set-piece after a quarter-final playoff loss to the Stormers, where they struggled against a dominant South African side. The club signed loose-head prop Scott Sio from Exeter Chiefs. The 34-year-old earned 74 caps for Australia and recently made his final appearance for the Chiefs in the June Premiership final.

Flanker Dan Thomas acknowledged the need for improvement following the playoff exit, and Sio aims to be a central figure in fixing those issues. Head coach Corniel van Zyl highlighted Sio’s leadership qualities and his ambition to potentially qualify for a third World Cup, this time representing Samoa.

Ereatara Enari Brings Winning Mindset to Dragons

The Dragons undertook a quieter summer focused on retention, adding only three senior players under head coach Filo Tiatia: Tonga wing Anzelo Tuitavuki, Samoa scrum-half Ereatara Enari, and New Zealand back-rower Terrell Peita. Enari arrives having recently won Super Rugby with the Hurricanes, where he served as deputy to All Blacks scrum-half Cam Roigard and featured in 15 matches.

Dragons defence coach Dale MacLeod praised the 29-year-old for his competitiveness, engine, and “X-factor,” noting his ability to score tries. Enari is expected to compete with Che Hope, Morgan Lloyd, and Rhodri Williams for the starting position, while also providing leadership to the younger members of the squad.
