British pop sensation Ed Sheeran departed from his long-standing apolitical stance to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict during his concert in Philadelphia on Saturday. The performance marked his first appearance since a significant controversy surrounding the removal of fellow musician Macklemore from his tour.
Sheeran described the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led assault on Israel as “horrific,” noting that the attack resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and dozens of hostages. He subsequently characterized Israel’s military response in Gaza as “catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate,” citing reports that the conflict has claimed the lives of more than 70,000 Palestinians.
The singer also spoke out against what he termed “systemic injustice” in the occupied West Bank, where Israeli settlement expansion continues despite United Nations designations of such actions as flagrant violations of international law.
“I don’t want to disappoint fans, and I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet,” Sheeran told the audience. He acknowledged the difficulty of his recent choices, stating, “I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes, and I’m so, so sorry.”
This statement represents a shift from Sheeran’s previous comments on Instagram, where he maintained that his audiences were not seeking a “political forum.” The controversy originated when Macklemore was dropped as a supporting act after making pro-Palestinian remarks during a show in New Jersey in early September. While Sheeran denied personal responsibility, alleging that venues threatened to cancel performances if Macklemore remained, reports indicated that billionaire Robert Kraft informed Sheeran that the rapper would be barred from performing at Gillette Stadium.
The dispute triggered a wave of withdrawals from Sheeran’s tour. Artists including Finneas, Lukas Graham, and Aaron Rowe, along with Sheeran’s own backing band, pulled out in solidarity with Macklemore. Consequently, the world’s best-selling musical artist found himself without opening acts for several shows.
Before the Philadelphia concert, dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered peacefully outside Lincoln Financial Field, waving flags and chanting slogans. Among them was Brandon Ateke, an 18-year-old who chose to protest rather than attend the show. “I decided to not attend the concert and instead attend the protest to bring light to the genocide going on in Gaza today,” Ateke told AFP.
The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) has formally called for a boycott of Sheeran’s world tour in response to the events.
