The app is pre-installed on all modern iOS devices, recognizable by its black icon featuring sound waves. If it has been removed, it can be reinstalled at no cost from the App Store. To begin a recording, simply tap the prominent red button; tapping it once more stops the session and saves the file.
For more advanced control during a session, users can swipe up from the recording card to access a full-screen interface. This view includes pause and rewind functions. Rewinding is particularly useful for replacing specific sections; if a mistake is made or background noise interferes, the user can re-record just that segment rather than starting over entirely. Additionally, multitrack recording is available via the Plus button, though this feature is restricted to iPhone 16 Pro models and newer.
Before starting, it is advisable to adjust the recording format. Navigating to Settings, then Apps, and selecting Voice Memos allows users to choose between Mono, Stereo, and Spatial audio modes. Spatial recording, available on supported devices, creates a three-dimensional soundscape.
Once a recording is saved, several editing options become available through the app’s interface. Tapping the three-dot menu in the top-left corner reveals a Copy Transcript function, allowing text to be pasted into other applications like Notes or Messages. The Trim tool enables the removal of unwanted segments.
Further customization is possible through additional controls. A speech bubble icon displays the real-time transcript, and tapping any word jumps playback to that moment. A slider icon at the bottom allows for playback speed adjustments. Depending on the recording mode, users can toggle Skip Silence for mono or stereo tracks, or Enhance Recording to reduce background noise. For spatial recordings, a Studio Sound option simulates a professional studio environment, with intensity controlled by a slider. After applying changes, the blue button finalizes and saves the edits.
Managing recordings is straightforward, with the most recent memos appearing at the top of the list. Users can share, rename, favorite, or view transcripts for individual files. For larger libraries, the Search function locates content within transcripts, while the browser icon helps organize files into folders.
To ensure accessibility across devices, Voice Memos can be synced via iCloud. This is enabled by going to Settings, tapping the user’s name, selecting iCloud, and ensuring Voice Memos is toggled on. While the app is robust for general audio capture, users should note that iOS also offers a native call recording feature for phone conversations, which provides a smoother experience than using Voice Memos alongside a second device.
