China Overtakes Global Markets as Rwanda’s Top Export Destination

In the opening quarter of 2026, China surpassed all other nations to become Rwanda’s primary export partner, absorbing 26% of the country’s total shipments. This marks a dramatic reversal from just twelve months prior, when Chinese markets accounted for fewer than 5% of Rwandan exports.

The surge is largely attributed to Beijing’s decision to eliminate tariffs on nearly all products originating from Rwanda. However, reports indicate that tariff reductions alone do not guarantee market access for the country’s producers.

For Rwandan exporters aiming to sell to a population of 1.4 billion, the greater hurdle lies in compliance with strict sanitary and phytosanitary standards. Successfully navigating these regulatory requirements remains the critical factor in sustaining this newly established trade relationship.
