Xiaomi recently disclosed the final specifications and pricing for its upcoming SkyNomad SUV lineup in Beijing, signaling a direct challenge to established Western luxury manufacturers. The introduction positions Xiaomi Auto to compete aggressively with premium marques such as Bentley and Range Rover in the highly lucrative sport utility vehicle segment.
According to data from the Schaeffler Group, trucks and SUVs now account for more than 80 percent of new vehicle sales in the United States. Marc McGrath, the US CEO of Schaeffler, noted that the company is developing solid-state batteries specifically to meet the high energy demands of these popular vehicle types, aiming to avoid the market missteps seen with previous electric truck launches.
The dominance of Chinese manufacturers in this sector is already evident in Europe. The Jaecoo 7, a Chinese-made compact SUV available in both gasoline and hybrid versions, has experienced rapid growth in the UK since its launch in 2025. Priced at approximately £29,210, or just over $39,000, it has been nicknamed the “Temu Range Rover” due to its luxurious marketing and affordable cost. Some UK dealerships have already switched allegiance from Japanese brands like Nissan to become official Jaecoo dealers, stocking the model alongside the Jaecoo 5 and 8.
Other major Chinese automakers, including XPeng and BYD, are pursuing similar strategies across Europe. However, Xiaomi Auto is expected to be the most significant newcomer, with plans to launch in the European market in 2027 despite only producing its first electric vehicle in 2024.
The new SkyNomad N70 is a five-seat extended-range electric vehicle. Marketing materials compare its technology favorably to that of a Range Rover Velar while highlighting a price point roughly half that of the British luxury competitor. Xiaomi also demonstrated its rapid development capabilities earlier in 2024 when its SU7 Ultra sedan claimed the title of “World’s Fastest Sedan” in the same year it was unveiled.
Will they actually manage European certification by 2027? The regulatory hurdles alone seem massive for a new entrant.
