A new maritime arms race is taking shape on the ocean floor, with Germany-based defense technology firm Euroatlas positioning itself to secure the increasingly vulnerable seabed. The company has developed an autonomous underwater vehicle known as GrayShark, designed to operate without continuous human input to perform missions in strategic underwater zones.
According to Verineia Codrean, Euroatlas’s chief strategy and partnerships officer, the drone is engineered to navigate around obstacles and adhere to pre-set directives when encountering unforeseen scenarios. For instance, during pipeline inspections, GrayShark can identify potential mine-like objects, alert command, and hold position for further instructions rather than acting independently.
Codrean envisions a future where fleets of such autonomous vehicles provide constant surveillance over critical infrastructure, converging on specific locations only when anomalies are detected. This approach contrasts sharply with traditional methods that rely on warships to guard individual stretches of cable, a strategy Codrean describes as impractical given the sheer scale of the ocean.
“It is virtually impossible to cover the entire ocean,” Codrean told CNBC. “You just need to know which are the areas that are more interesting to have that constant visibility of what is happening there.”
She emphasized that the core challenge is one of scale. Crewed assets such as frigates, submarines, and maritime patrol aircraft are both costly and scarce, making it difficult to maintain a persistent presence across the vast distances where pipelines and data cables are located.
“The underwater space domain is gaining a bigger set of problems that wasn’t present until now,” she said, noting that from a mathematical standpoint, human-crewed vessels cannot be positioned everywhere threats emerge, whether from sabotage or the movement of enemy submarines.
Smart approach to hold position rather than act independently. That hesitation could prevent accidental escalation during inspections.

Is this really about defense? Or just normalizing autonomous weapons on the seabed without clear international rules?
Finally, a scalable solution for protecting undersea cables. Human crews simply cannot cover that much ocean floor effectively.
