Anthropic Confirms It Operates Wet Biology Lab to Test AI Models in Real-World Experiments

Anthropic has officially confirmed that it operates a physical biology laboratory where it utilizes its artificial intelligence models to conduct hands-on experiments. This development aligns with broader industry claims that AI could serve as a critical tool in medical advancement. Recently, CEO Dario Amodei stated his belief that AI has the potential to cure most major diseases within the next five to ten years. However, realizing that vision requires AI systems to validate their hypotheses through practical application rather than simulation alone.

Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, told Reuters that the company is actively performing real-world lab work. He emphasized that while computational methods are valuable, he believes physical experimentation remains the definitive test for biological research for the foreseeable future. The facility functions similarly to traditional biotech labs, where Anthropic conducts internal research alongside collaborations with external partners.

The existence of the lab follows Anthropic’s acquisition of stealth-mode AI biotech company Coefficient Bio in April. While the company declined to specify the exact focus of the wet lab, it clarified that drug discovery is not its primary objective. This distinction appears strategic, as Anthropic seeks to avoid competition with its pharmaceutical clients, including a recently announced partnership with Novo Nordisk for joint drug discovery efforts. The company has previously faced criticism for launching products that perceivedly compete with those of its customers.

Alongside the lab announcement, Anthropic introduced a Life Sciences Verification Program this week. This initiative grants vetted biological researchers access to the company’s most advanced AI models.

The move comes amid heightened tension regarding AI safety within the organization. The news follows the resignation of researcher Jacob Coxon, who warned that some builders at Anthropic earnestly believe AI could cause human extinction by the end of the decade. Additionally, the company’s alignment lead has estimated the probability of AI exterminating humanity within the next ten years at greater than 10%. In response to growing concerns, Amodei recently called for industry-wide self-regulation and slow-downs, citing bioterrorism as one of AI’s most significant risks.

The contrast between these dire safety warnings and the establishment of a new wet lab has drawn commentary from within the tech sector. Investor and AI coding startup founder Chamath Palihapitiya noted the irony on X, suggesting that the same group issuing existential warnings is now building biological laboratories in San Francisco, advising against the practice.
