HAVANA — Cuba’s electrical grid failed on Friday, cutting off power to millions of residents across the island. The Ministry of Energy and Mines confirmed the outage via its official X account but did not disclose the specific cause of the failure. Officials stated that restoration protocols had been initiated to bring services back online.
This incident marks the latest in a series of severe power failures that have plagued the Caribbean nation. Nationwide blackouts have occurred with increasing frequency over the past two years, driven by a deep economic crisis. Additional total outages took place in early August, following similar events in July and March, alongside various regional disruptions.
The situation has deteriorated significantly since January, when the United States implemented an energy blockade designed to pressure Cuba into political change. The restrictions bar Cuba from importing essential fuel for its thermoelectric plants and replacement parts for aging infrastructure, much of which has become obsolete due to lack of maintenance.
Even during periods when the national grid remains operational, Cuban citizens regularly face prolonged blackouts lasting more than 30 consecutive hours.
