Irish Finance Minister Michael McGrath has stated that the ongoing disruption in the Strait of Hormuz is the main cause of the current energy crisis, rather than the conflict in Ukraine.
Speaking to broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ), McGrath emphasized that the closure of this critical waterway has resulted in a significant spike in energy prices.
The comments come amid intensifying tensions between the United States and Iran, which have raised concerns about the stability of global energy supplies. The Strait of Hormuz serves as a vital conduit for a large portion of the world’s oil and gas, making any disruption to its operations a major concern for international markets.
While the war in Ukraine has historically been a focal point for discussions regarding European energy security, McGrath’s assessment shifts the blame toward the geopolitical instability in the Middle East.
