A critical software failure within the United Kingdom’s air traffic control infrastructure was responsible for a severe operational breakdown that disrupted flights for hundreds of thousands of passengers. According to a new report released by National Air Traffic Services (Nats), the defect corrupted flight data in the span of a single millisecond, precipitating a six-hour system outage that led to widespread cancellations and delays across the country.
The incident, which occurred last week, initially surfaced at approximately 10:00 am; however, officials did not declare a major incident until 12:30 pm. The delay between the onset of the technical failure and the official response has drawn scrutiny regarding the speed and effectiveness of the emergency protocols in place.
While Nats has attributed the chaos to the rapid data corruption, government ministers have expressed concern that the investigation does not fully address how such a vulnerability remained undetected. Officials stated that they require an urgent understanding of why the flaw was not identified and remediated prior to causing such extensive disruption to the nation’s aviation network.
