Anthropic has established a biology research laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area to conduct physical experiments, according to reports from Reuters. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, the company’s Head of Life Sciences, confirmed the facility’s existence, emphasizing that real-world laboratory work remains the ultimate test for biological research.
“We believe that to do biology, the final test is still and will be for a while in real lab work,” Kauderer-Abrams stated. He noted that while Anthropic is performing these experiments in-house, the company also collaborates with external partners when appropriate.
The exact focus of the new lab has not been disclosed. However, in June, Anthropic launched a drug discovery initiative called Claude Science. At the time, the company indicated an interest in pursuing research that pharmaceutical firms might avoid due to uncertain financial returns. A spokesperson clarified to Reuters that the lab was not created exclusively for drug discovery.
Kauderer-Abrams expressed confidence that artificial intelligence could accelerate the discovery of treatments for conditions previously considered too difficult to address, including complex and targeted therapies. Reports suggest Anthropic is exploring ways to have Claude control robots to perform scientific experiments. Nevertheless, Kauderer-Abrams cautioned that the company is in the early stages of using AI to automate lab tasks and stressed that human oversight remains essential for safety. He also confirmed that Anthropic has not yet conducted any clinical trials.
The move comes as Anthropic continues to navigate public trust issues surrounding its technology. The company recently revealed that it had flagged and stopped multiple scientists who were attempting to use its AI models to design potential biological weapons. Additionally, CEO Dario Amodei has advocated for a slowdown in advanced AI development to mitigate the risks associated with frontier systems.
