Century-Old Aztec Codex Returns to Mexico on Temporary Loan

A treasured 16th-century Mexican manuscript detailing Aztec history through pictograms was unveiled Thursday in Mexico City, returning to its country of origin nearly two centuries after it was taken to France.

The document has been held by France’s National Library for more than 100 years. The temporary loan was arranged to commemorate the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Despite the current exhibition, Mexican officials continue to advocate for the permanent repatriation of the codex.
