Severe weather has battered eastern Spain, resulting in at least one fatality and significant flooding in major cities including Barcelona and Valencia. The storms began moving through the Castilla-La Mancha region on Wednesday afternoon before stalling over the east coast, where heavy rain persisted through the night.
Residents in Valencia and Barcelona reported torrential rainfall, high winds, and large hail. Weather monitoring stations located west of Barcelona recorded accumulation exceeding 100mm (4 inches) over just a few hours, with some areas seeing 70mm of rain within a 30-minute window early Thursday morning.
The deluge caused widespread urban flooding, submerging vehicles and roads, and led to the cancellation of numerous flights across the affected regions.
