Fatal Shark Attack Suspected at Perth Beach in Western Australia

Emergency responders were dispatched to Sorrento Beach in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, on Friday following reports of a likely fatal shark attack. A police statement confirmed that both a police boat and helicopter were mobilized to assist with the investigation into the marine incident.

State wildlife officers also commenced an investigation into the reported attack. According to a government statement, authorities quickly closed the beach to swimmers as a precautionary measure while they assessed the situation.

Witnesses on the scene reported visible blood in the water. Jacqui Rapaic, a beachgoer, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that a companion alerted her to the possibility of an attack. “I looked out to the ocean and I could see a pool of blood,” Rapaic said.

Local resident Ryan Rowe arrived shortly after the incident and stated that an onlooker informed him someone had been bitten by a shark. Expressing shock at the volume of blood observed, Rowe told The West Australian newspaper, “I couldn’t believe there was that much blood (that had) come out of a human body.”

This incident follows another recent shark attack in the region. On Monday, a surfer suffered serious leg wounds during an attack near Geraldton, located approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of Perth.

The suspected Perth attack would bring the total number of confirmed fatal shark attacks in Australia to four for the year. In January, a 12-year-old boy died in a Sydney hospital several days after being mauled by a bull shark in Sydney Harbor. Additionally, three spearfishing divers lost their lives in separate incidents off the coast over a four-week period in May and June.

Data from the Australian Shark Incident Database, a collaborative project involving Taronga Conservation Society Australia, Flinders University, and the New South Wales state government, indicates that the country typically averages between two and three fatal shark attacks annually since the year 2000.
