Universal Pictures is proceeding with its plans to release Alex Gibney’s documentary “Musk” internationally, sources told Variety, dismissing reports that the project had been stalled. The distribution giant has maintained enthusiasm for a global rollout despite recent legal threats issued by the film’s subject, Elon Musk.
While no specific date has been set for the overseas launch, the delay is consistent with typical scheduling for a feature of this magnitude. The nearly four-hour documentary is scheduled for a theatrical North American premiere on October 9 through indie distributor Bleecker Street. Following its theatrical run, the film is slated to debut on HBO during the first quarter of 2027.
The legal tension intensified after the documentary premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Musk took to the social media platform X to criticize the film, labeling it a “hit piece” and accusing Gibney of compiling a list of individuals who either hold personal grudges or lack any actual knowledge of him. It remains unclear whether Musk has viewed the completed film.
Compounding the controversy, Musk’s attorney Alex Spiro threatened to file a defamation lawsuit prior to the October release. The legal action was reportedly prompted by a scene featuring text exchanges between Musk and Ashley St. Clair, a MAGA influencer with whom he has a child. The documentary highlights these messages in the context of the 2024 presidential election.
Addressing the film’s portrayal of the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, Variety critic Owen Gleiberman wrote in his Venice review that the documentary reveals Musk as “a creator of mirages who promises more than he delivers.” Gleiberman described the subject as a “genuine if flawed technocratic visionary, a messianic opportunist, and something of a crackpot,” noting that the film pieces together a history of scandals, cut corners, and poor management.
Representatives for Universal and Gibney declined to comment on the ongoing legal disputes or the international release strategy.
