GOP Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar Runs Ad Criticizing Trump’s Immigration Enforcement

In a new campaign advertisement, Republican Representative Maria Elvira Salazar of Florida directly addressed President Trump, stating that his immigration enforcement initiatives have exceeded appropriate boundaries. The ad highlights concerns among Hispanic voters, suggesting they feel abandoned by the current administration despite supporting him in the 2024 election.

“Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far,” Salazar stated in the video. She cited data indicating that in July, half of the 50,000 individuals detained during immigration operations had no prior criminal record. Salazar urged the president to reconsider advice from his advisers, drawing parallels to how Abraham Lincoln addressed slavery and Ronald Reagan approached communism. She clarified that she is not advocating for amnesty, but rather for a “dignified life” for immigrants within the United States.

This ad marks a notable departure for Salazar, who has previously expressed criticism of deportation strategies but now distances herself from the president just weeks before the midterm elections. Her Florida district, which leans Republican and has a nearly three-quarters Hispanic population according to Census Bureau figures, is crucial to her re-election bid.

National sentiment on the issue appears to align with Salazar’s concerns. A recent CBS News poll found that 55% of adults nationwide disapprove of the president’s handling of immigration, while his overall approval rating sits at 39%. Data reported by CBS News indicated that July was the first month of Trump’s second term where civil immigration violators accounted for more than half of all arrests.

Salazar, a Cuban-American former television journalist who has interviewed figures such as Nicolás Maduro and Fidel Castro, has long advocated for immigration reform. She supports providing renewable legal work status to undocumented workers who pay taxes and have lived in the U.S. for years without criminal records.

Her opponent, Democrat Eliott Rodriguez, a former CBS News Miami anchor who won his primary in August, strongly condemned the ad. “That video is mind-boggling,” Rodriguez said. He argued that Salazar remains part of Trump’s immigration agenda and accused her of voting against immigrant interests despite portraying herself as an advocate.

The White House has been contacted for comment regarding the advertisement.
