Cole Palmer poised for England recall as Tuchel faces selection dilemmas

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer is widely viewed as the most likely candidate to regain his place in the England national team, having been omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad in May alongside Phil Foden and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Palmer’s exceptional recent form in the Premier League has strengthened his case significantly, with the manager expected to prioritize his inclusion heading into the upcoming Nations League campaign.

Palmer has recovered fully from groin issues that restricted him to 26 appearances last season and has since become one of the league’s most impactful attackers. He has contributed two goals and two assists so far this term. Among his Chelsea teammates, only Joao Pedro has registered more goal involvements, while only Bruno Fernandes has created more chances and taken more shots combined than Palmer’s 24 chances created and 25 shots.

The competition for the number 10 role previously saw Tuchel select Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, and Eberechi Eze. However, Eze’s Premier League form has dipped, with the Arsenal player failing to start a top-flight match this season despite featuring in European and Carabao Cup fixtures. Conversely, Palmer shares a strong tactical connection with Rogers, whom Tuchel values highly for his ability to retain possession and link play.

Tuchel has previously stated that England’s playing philosophy does not accommodate ball-retaining midfielders, raising questions about whether he can justify excluding three elite talents known for their passing and creativity. The manager is known for his strong self-belief, making it unlikely he will publicly reverse his previous decisions, yet ignoring Palmer’s current brilliance could prove damaging.

Phil Foden, who leads the Premier League in assists following a ball carry with two, remains technically gifted but his fit within Tuchel’s system is still uncertain. Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold faces a steep path back into the squad. Despite Liverpool’s right-back deficiencies during the World Cup—highlighted by injuries to Reece James and Tino Livramento—Tuchel has maintained that Alexander-Arnold’s defensive profile does not suit his tactical requirements. The Real Madrid star has started just two LaLiga games this season but has provided more successful crosses than all but two defenders in the division.

Defensive injuries have opened opportunities at the back, with John Stones, Dan Burn, Djed Spence, and Ben White all sidelined. Harry Maguire, despite consistent performances for Manchester United, is considered unlikely to be recalled after his public frustration regarding his World Cup exclusion. Newcastle’s Lewis Hall, another controversial omission from the summer tournament, is expected to feature in the Nations League. Hall has been outstanding this season, leading the Premier League for winning possession in the defensive third and ranking fifth for successful blocks.

Up front, Leeds United’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin is making a strong case for recall with four goals in six games, including a brace against Newcastle. His main rival, Ollie Watkins, has moved to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, where he has scored three goals and provided two assists in four matches.

Ivan Toney is expected to be passed over due to an upcoming court appearance in Westminster related to assault charges. In goal, Dean Henderson’s foot injury creates a vacancy for a third keeper alongside Jordan Pickford and James Trafford. Young Arsenal prospect Max Dowman continues to impress but is being managed carefully by both club and country, with under-21 football seen as his next step rather than an immediate senior call-up.
