Bose has expanded its open-ear audio lineup with two new products: the Bose Sport Open Earbuds and the second-generation Bose Ultra Open Earbuds. Both devices are scheduled to go on sale on October 1.
The new Ultra Open Earbuds serve as the direct successor to the 2024 model, which Bose describes as its flagship open-ear experience. The updated earbuds feature a redesigned metallic cap with a beveled finish and a case that now supports wireless charging and can stand upright. While the distinctive cuff-clip silhouette remains, Bose notes it retains the comfort profile of the original.
Audio performance has been enhanced with a new driver designed to deliver increased volume and deeper bass. The devices also introduce Cinema Mode, Bose’s spatial audio feature tailored for movies, TV shows, and video podcasts. Due to the open-ear design, noise cancellation is not available; however, users can customize sound through a three-band equalizer via the Bose app and utilize an automatic volume control setting.
Connectivity includes Bluetooth 5.4 with multipoint support for two devices simultaneously. On launch day, a firmware update will add compatibility with Google Find Hub and Alexa+, alongside a new Apple Music shortcut for direct playlist access. Battery life has been extended to nine hours, up from 7.5 hours in the first generation, with the case providing just under 20 additional hours. Users should note that frequent use of Immersive Audio and Cinema Mode will significantly reduce battery duration.
The Bose Sport Open Earbuds represent a new category within the lineup, sharing the OpenAudio technology that allows listeners to remain aware of their surroundings. Designed specifically for fitness and outdoor activities, they feature a lightweight build with a soft silicone cuff-clip to ensure security during vigorous movement. Bose claims the design is secure enough to withstand head shakes and even acrobatic movements.
Physical controls on the Sport model facilitate easy adjustments to volume and calls during workouts. The earbuds include custom drivers, Auto Volume, and multipoint connectivity. They offer up to seven hours of battery life and 22 hours with the wireless charging case. Rated IP54 for dust and water resistance, they are suitable for sweaty runs but not for swimming.
The Bose Sport Open Earbuds will be available in Black and White Smoke for $199. The second-generation Ultra Open Earbuds come in Nue Black and White Smoke, priced at $299.
Sport version at $199 is a steal compared to the Ultra. But will they really stay put during heavy squats?
