The Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, Queensland, has received official approval to serve as the venue for rowing and canoeing events at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics and Paralympics. The river, which hosts approximately 500 saltwater crocodiles, passed an independent technical assessment regarding its suitability for international competition.
The evaluation, commissioned by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA), focused on hydrological performance, weather patterns, water levels, and flood risks rather than wildlife safety. Officials confirmed that contingency protocols for crocodile sightings are already established at local regattas and national training camps, and both World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide have endorsed the course.
World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland stated that the analysis confirmed the river can provide fair competition conditions consistent with Olympic requirements. Paddle Worldwide President Thomas Konietzko added that the technical review provided confidence that the venue would deliver a high-quality field of play for canoe sprint athletes.
Brisbane 2032 President Andrew Liveris described the endorsement as a significant step forward, noting it allows planning to focus exclusively on Rockhampton. He previously addressed concerns about the local wildlife by comparing them to sharks in surfing venues, arguing for a “can do” mindset.
Despite the official approval, former Australian Olympic rowing champion Drew Ginn expressed reservations. Speaking to BBC Radio, Ginn highlighted concerns regarding potential flooding, the integrity of race fairness, and the logistical impact of hosting events in Rockhampton, located six to seven hours from Brisbane. While he admitted he was not personally afraid of crocodiles, he questioned whether relocating them would be desirable and warned that variable river conditions could unfairly influence race outcomes.
