Just eight months ago, Donyell Malen was struggling to make a significant impact at Aston Villa. Today, the Netherlands international has transformed into the most productive forward in Europe’s top five leagues.
Since making his debut for Roma on January 18, Malen has netted 20 goals, outpacing high-profile rivals such as Harry Kane, who has scored 16, and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, with 15. He also leads all players in combined goal contributions with 22, surpassing Bruno Fernandes (20), Yamal (19), and Kane (18).
The statistical leap from his time at Villa Park is stark. In 46 Premier League appearances for Aston Villa, the 27-year-old recorded only 10 goals and two assists, with a scoring rate of one goal every 149.8 minutes. Since arriving in Rome, he has scored 21 goals and provided three assists in just 25 matches, improving his scoring frequency to one goal every 96.7 minutes.
Football journalist Julien Laurens described the Dutchman’s current form as “incredible” and “super clinical,” noting that he is central to Roma’s attacking play. This resurgence appears to stem less from a sudden change in confidence and more from a tactical adjustment by manager Gian Piero Gasperini.
At Villa, Malen was deployed across the frontline and spent only 52% of his league minutes as a central striker. In contrast, he has played as a focal point through the middle for 99% of his Serie A minutes in Rome, a role that maximizes his attacking instincts.
Malen is part of a broader trend of former Premier League players flourishing in Italy. Manchester United’s Scott McTominay has scored 22 Serie A goals since joining Napoli in August 2024, earning a street shrine from supporters. Similarly, Rasmus Hojlund has recorded 19 goal involvements since his move to Napoli, trailing only Federico Dimarco, Lautaro Martinez, and Malen.
For Malen, however, the turnaround is particularly dramatic. Rather than altering his game fundamentally, Roma has found a system that allows him to thrive, marking one of the most notable player revivals in European football this year.
