Martine Barons, a 65-year-old grandmother from Stratford-upon-Avon, has secured her third world championship title in powerlifting, achieving the feat just two and a half years after picking up the sport.
Barons began weightlifting during the lockdown period after attending a seminar that advised women undergoing menopause to reduce running and increase resistance training. Her professional journey accelerated when a colleague at the University of Warwick, who works as a personal trainer, introduced her to deadlifting and identified her natural potential. This mentorship led to her enduring nickname, ‘The Deadlifting Grandma.’
On Monday, she claimed victory at the AWPC World Powerlifting Championships in the 65-to-85 age category. Her entry into competitive lifting was initially casual; she accepted invitations to the British and European Championships simply because she felt it would be rude to decline, with no initial expectation of such high-level success.
Reflecting on her physical transformation, Barons told BBC CWR that she has experienced a dramatic improvement in both her physique and capabilities. ‘I am sure that my body is at least 20 years younger,’ she said.
Beyond the accolades, Barons highlighted the practical benefits of her training regimen. She noted that she can now touch her toes immediately after waking up and possesses the strength to move furniture and play vigorously with her grandchildren. She also reported improvements in her posture and a significant boost in daily confidence.
Offering advice to other women looking to enhance their strength, Barons suggested either joining a gym to work with a coach on a tailored program or starting gently at home with resistance bands if they prefer privacy.
Describing her recent journey as ‘so exciting,’ Barons added that the sport has allowed her to meet people from around the world, making her transition from casual participant to triple world champion a delightful experience.
Resisting the urge to start deadlifting immediately after reading this. How much weight do you recommend for beginners?
Two and a half years to a triple world champion? That training intensity is genuinely shocking.
This is absolutely inspiring. Women over sixty should see this and realize age is just a number.
