Israel and Morocco announced on Wednesday that they will open embassies in each other’s capitals, a decision reached after negotiations between their foreign ministers and the United States ambassador to the United Nations in New York.
The two nations originally established diplomatic ties in 2020 through the Abraham Accords, a US-brokered framework that normalized relations between Israel and several Arab states.
In a statement, the Israeli foreign ministry confirmed that both parties reaffirmed their commitment to “upgrading diplomatic relations between the two countries, elevating their respective diplomatic missions to the level of embassies, and the appointment of ambassadors.”
A joint declaration issued by the US mission to the UN stated that the three nations believe establishing full diplomatic, peaceful, and friendly relations is in the common interest of both countries and will further the cause of peace.
No specific timeline was provided for when the embassies would become operational. This development follows a similar announcement made by Israel in June 2022, during a visit to Morocco by then-Foreign Minister Yair Lapid.
Additionally, the two countries agreed that a series of economic agreements would be finalized by the end of the year. The Israeli statement also noted that high-level reciprocal visits between the two nations are expected in the coming months.
