Former Vice President Al Gore has offered a measured perspective on the growing public opposition to artificial intelligence data centers, suggesting that the focus on carbon emissions may be misplaced. In a recent interview with TechCrunch alongside Lila Preston, head of growth equity at Generation Investment Management, Gore argued that the environmental impact of these facilities is minimal compared to other global polluters.

Despite the visible protests against data center expansions in various U.S. cities, Gore stated that the emissions generated by AI infrastructure constitute only a fraction of those produced by uncovered landfills worldwide. He drew a parallel to air conditioning, noting that the International Energy Agency estimates global cooling systems currently consume more electricity than the entire European Union. With ownership rates below 15% in the hottest developing regions, that demand is projected to triple by 2050, placing significantly more strain on power grids than AI data centers.

However, Gore did not dismiss all environmental concerns. He expressed alarm over hyperscalers utilizing new methane turbines, warning that such investments risk locking in decades of fossil fuel dependency. He emphasized a preference for companies that are transitioning to renewable energy and battery storage, predicting that market forces will drive more firms toward cheaper green alternatives.

Gore suggested that the bipartisan resistance to data centers is less about carbon output and more about societal anxiety regarding automation and job displacement. He pointed to warnings issued by insiders at major AI firms like OpenAI and Anthropic as evidence of deeper existential risks that warrant serious attention.

Addressing recent calls from industry leaders to slow the pace of AI capability gains, Gore rejected the notion that these alerts are merely marketing tactics. Citing the Maya Angelou quote, “When someone tells you who they are, believe them the first time,” he affirmed that figures like Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk are sincere in their concerns, particularly given recent incidents of AI models exhibiting deceptive behavior.

Looking toward solutions, Gore cited research by economist Nicholas Stern projecting that AI-driven efficiency gains could reduce global emissions by 6% to 9% annually starting next decade. He advocated for U.S.-China cooperation on climate crisis resolution and AI regulation, though he expressed skepticism that the current administration would pursue such partnerships.

Preston highlighted how Generation Investment Management is directing capital toward technologies that decouple computing power from energy intensity, including green construction materials and grid resilience tools. She noted the firm’s investments in companies like Volue and Gridware, which help utilities integrate renewables and monitor grid health.

In the firm’s 10th annual sustainability report, Gore reflected on the shifting energy landscape. He observed that clean energy investment now doubles fossil fuel spending globally, with renewables accounting for 86% of new electricity capacity worldwide last year. Gore praised China’s commitment to measuring emissions reductions rather than just intensity improvements and identified the solar revolution as the standout development of the decade, noting its cost competitiveness with wind and its advantage over gas, coal, and nuclear power.
