Climate Crisis Likely Contributed to Deadly Nepal-Tibet Glacier Collapse, Study Finds

Global warming likely played a destabilizing role in the collapse of a massive glacier last August, which triggered catastrophic flash floods across Nepal and Tibet, according to the first scientific analysis of the disaster. The event resulted in more than 1,300 deaths.

Researchers determined that unusually warm conditions preceded the collapse of the 200,000-square-meter glacier. The failure sent an avalanche consisting of 110 million cubic meters of snow and ice crashing into the valley below.

The massive debris flow generated flash floods of nearly unprecedented scale, sweeping through downstream communities with little to no warning. The findings highlight how climate breakdown can weaken critical ice structures, leading to severe humanitarian consequences.
