Meteor Tracking Nonprofit Suffers Critical Cyberattack

The International Meteor Organization (IMO), a nonprofit entity responsible for coordinating both professional and amateur observations of meteor phenomena, announced Wednesday that its digital infrastructure has been severely compromised by a cyberattack.

A static notice posted to the organization’s website stated that the attack dealt a “critical blow” to its aging systems, forcing much of the site offline. Officials expect the disruption to last for several weeks while they transition operations to new infrastructure and service providers.

In the interim, the IMO has prioritized the acceptance of fireball reports through an alternative submission channel. Additionally, the organization is utilizing its Facebook page to disseminate updates and other relevant information to the public.
