Electronic waste generated by the artificial intelligence boom has been significantly underestimated, according to a new report released by the nonprofit Basel Action Network (BAN). By the year 2050, the volume of trash could reach levels sufficient to fill 23 million shipping containers. To visualize the scale, these 40-foot containers lined up end-to-end would circle the Earth approximately six times.
This projection represents a substantial increase over earlier studies on AI’s environmental footprint. The authors achieved this higher estimate by accounting for the entire infrastructure required to support data center servers, rather than focusing solely on the hardware itself. According to BAN, this wider lens offers a more accurate depiction of the debris left behind by AI expansion.
The organization emphasized the hidden physical cost of digital advancements, noting that while AI processes may seem weightless, every deployed model generates tangible waste.
