When Paul W.S. Anderson launched the Resident Evil film series in 2002, adaptations of video games remained a niche market. While titles such as Mortal Kombat and Tomb Raider demonstrated that console experiences could translate to the big screen, the enduring memory of the poorly received 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie lingered over the industry.
Although Anderson’s depiction of Raccoon City generally resonated with theatergoers, dedicated followers of Capcom’s original games expressed frustration. The initial films took significant liberties with the storyline and characters, straying far from the established lore.
Director Zach Cregger’s latest installment aims to reconnect with the franchise’s roots. However, the film is primarily driven by comedic moments, with horror and suspense taking a secondary role.
