Breville Eye Q Review: A High-Tech Toaster That Toasts by Color

Breville has introduced the Eye Q, the world’s first toaster that determines doneness based on visual color rather than a set timer. While the technology delivers exceptional results, the appliance carries a premium price tag that may give budget-conscious shoppers pause.

Marketed as the solution to the classic pop-up toaster’s inherent unpredictability, the Eye Q replaces traditional mechanical springs and dials with a futuristic design featuring rounded edges and a non-stick ceramic top. The interface is minimalist, utilizing intuitive buttons to select from seven shade settings, a dedicated bagel mode, and a sourdough function. Instead of a lever, users press a central button to lower the bread via internal motors.

The core innovation lies in the device’s optical sensors, which monitor the toast’s color 10 times per second. Once the bread reaches the user-selected shade, the mechanism automatically lifts the slices, accompanied by an auditory signal. This eliminates the guesswork associated with traditional timers, which can vary depending on coil temperature and bread type.

In testing, the Eye Q produced a smooth gradient of toast shades ranging from barely crisped to deep brown, with the default middle setting achieving a perfect golden hue. The sourdough mode proved particularly effective for thick loaves, such as French miche, enhancing the Maillard reaction in the bread’s crevices. However, the reviewer noted that oversized items, such as thick NYC-style bagels, often did not fit properly in the slots, potentially causing uneven toasting or burning due to proximity to the heating elements.

Cleanliness is maintained through a removable crumb tray, and the unit is lightweight at just under six pounds, making it easy to store when not in use. Despite its ease of use and superior performance, the two-slice model starts at $300. This places it at roughly ten times the cost of basic competitors, raising questions about whether the advanced features justify the expense for average consumers.
