Legendary Nigerian actor Olu Jacobs dies aged 84

Olu Jacobs, one of Nigeria’s most distinguished actors whose five-decade career spanned theatre, television, and cinema, has died at the age of 84. His wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, confirmed the news and has requested that the media respect the family’s privacy during their mourning period.

In a statement, Silva described Jacobs as “The Lion of Lufodo,” noting that his life was “well lived and fought.” She also called on bloggers and social media influencers to honor the family’s wishes for confidentiality at this time.

Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs received formal training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before launching a career that included roles in British television productions and international films. He later became a defining pillar of Nigeria’s film industry, widely respected for his commanding screen presence and versatility across numerous local productions.

Among his notable works are the films My Kingdom, Covert Operation, and One Fine Day. Throughout his career, he received significant accolades, including the African Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role and various lifetime achievement honors. In 2011, he was conferred the national honor of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in recognition of his contributions to Nigerian cinema.

Jacobs and Silva also co-founded the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, initiatives aimed at developing and training performing artists in Nigeria. In recent years, the actor had largely remained out of the public eye due to health issues.
