Ed Sheeran’s North and South American tour faced significant disruption on Tuesday when four supporting acts announced they were leaving the tour in solidarity with rapper Macklemore. The move comes after Macklemore was dropped from the lineup following his public expressions of support for Palestine.
Aaron Rowe and the Irish band Beoga, the Danish group Lukas Graham, and musician Finneas all took to social media to confirm their departures. Rowe and Lukas Graham had been scheduled to fill in for Macklemore on remaining U.S. dates, while Beoga had been performing alongside Sheeran throughout the tour. Finneas, known for his collaboration with Billie Eilish, was set to join the South American leg later this year.
Finneas stated on Instagram that he withdrew to support Palestinian rights, writing, “Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed.” Beoga and Rowe cited Ireland’s history with colonialism and famine as key factors in their decision. Rowe, describing Sheeran as a friend who changed his life, added that he could not stand by while billionaires used their power to silence voices speaking out against injustice.
The controversy began after Macklemore shouted “Free Palestine!” during a concert at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on September 5. He subsequently stated that multiple U.S. venues, urged by Kraft Group owner Robert Kraft, refused to allow him to perform. Kraft, who also owns Gillette Stadium, claimed the decision was based on Macklemore’s comments and a history of rhetoric deemed offensive to the Jewish community.
Sheeran addressed the situation on Instagram, clarifying that the removal of Macklemore was the promoter’s decision, not his own. He emphasized his desire to avoid political entanglement, stating that his fans attend his shows to hear music rather than political debate. Sheeran also expressed concern for the touring crew and other artists who depend on the tour for their livelihoods.
Emails seeking comment were sent to Sheeran and promoter Messina Touring Group regarding the developing situation.
Robert Kraft’s interference is wild. Artists should be able to speak without venues banning them.
