Saudi Arabia has accused Yemen’s Houthi rebels of attempting to strike the holy city of Mecca, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two nations. The Saudi-led coalition stated that its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed a hostile drone launched by the group just outside the city’s airspace on Wednesday.
Turki al-Maliki, the coalition spokesman, posted the announcement on X, emphasizing that the security of Islam’s Two Holy Mosques and their pilgrims constitutes a “red line.” He warned that the Joint Forces Command would not hesitate to implement necessary deterrent measures against what the coalition designated as the “Terrorist Houthi Militia.” The accusation has drawn sharp condemnation across the Muslim world during an already volatile period in the Middle East.
The Houthi movement swiftly rejected the allegations, characterizing them as false propaganda. Hazem al-Assad, a senior figure within the movement, stated on social media that accusations of targeting Mecca were a “worn-out lie” that no longer deceived anyone. Despite the denial, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), representing 57 Muslim nations, strongly condemned the incident, describing the alleged attack as a “henious” act and an intolerable transgression against the sanctity of holy sites.
This incident adds to a series of escalating hostilities along Saudi Arabia’s southern border with Yemen. Since the conflict intensified in July, Houthi attacks have injured approximately 100 people, with 13 injured in a separate strike on Monday night. In July, the rebels also disrupted Saudi oil shipments through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which serves as an alternative export route while Iran blocks the nearby Strait of Hormuz.
In response to the growing threat, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman contacted Egyptian leadership on Tuesday to coordinate support against the Houthi rebels. The two leaders agreed on the necessity of ensuring freedom and security for maritime navigation through the Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab straits.
The intensifying regional instability has also prompted the United States to issue travel advisories for its citizens in Saudi Arabia. On Tuesday, the US Embassy urged Americans to reconsider travel to the kingdom, citing risks related to Iranian drone and missile attacks, armed conflict, terrorism, and potential exit bans.
