Imad “Jimmy” Innab, the owner of the Eighth Street Mini Market in Park Slope, was reunited with his store cat on Tuesday following a determined community-led search operation. The rescue came five days after a couple was seen on surveillance footage appearing to abduct the three-month-old kitten, Jabal, right outside the shop.
According to Innab, the incident occurred on Thursday morning as the market was preparing to open. He reviewed the security camera footage and noticed that Jabal had vanished. The video showed a man walking alongside a woman passing by the establishment; the man picked up the kitten, who visibly squirmed, and the pair quickly fled with their captive.
The brazen theft sparked an intense grassroots effort to locate the missing animal. The collective rallying of the neighborhood eventually led to Jabal’s safe return, bringing an end to the stressful ordeal for both the owner and the local community.
