NATO Intercepts Drone in Lithuania as Russian Ship Flares at Danish Helicopter

NATO fighter jets intercepted and destroyed a drone that breached Lithuanian airspace overnight, marking the first time the alliance member has downed an unmanned aircraft within its borders. The incident occurred just one day after NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte warned that military strikes near alliance territory would only intensify support for Ukraine against Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Lithuanian military officials confirmed the shootdown but declined to immediately identify the drone’s origin, stating that investigations were ongoing. However, two senior sources indicated the device was likely carrying explosives. The drone crashed near the village of Pratkūnai, approximately 100 kilometers west of Vilnius, close to the Kaunas Reservoir. Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Center, told local broadcaster LRT that the aircraft remained in Lithuanian airspace for roughly 30 minutes, flying along the edges of populated areas before being intercepted. He suggested the drone likely entered from Belarus.

Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas confirmed via Facebook that bomb-disposal experts neutralized an explosive device found on the wreckage.

Separately, Denmark reported that a Russian frigate fired flares at one of its air force helicopters while it conducted surveillance in the Baltic Sea off the port of Gedser. The Danish foreign ministry condemned the action as “completely unacceptable” on social media platform X and summoned the Russian ambassador. A Danish spokesperson described the helicopter’s activity as routine photographic coverage of a Russian warship.

In response, Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin claimed the Danish helicopter had performed “provocative actions” near Russian vessels, noting it was not the first such incident. The Kremlin, through presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, declined to comment due to a lack of details.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen characterized the events in Lithuania and Denmark as part of a “broader pattern of Russian aggression and provocation against Europe,” aimed at testing Western readiness. She asserted that Russia would find European resolve strengthening in response.

These incidents follow a recent trend of alleged Russian sabotage and surveillance activities across NATO countries, including Germany, Poland, and the UK. Officials in these nations have accused Moscow of involvement in drone incursions, arson, and plans to use explosive-laden drones to attack airports.

Lithuania, which shares borders with Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, has faced repeated drone threats. In May, residents of the capital, Vilnius, were ordered to take shelter, and top government officials were moved to secure locations during alarms over drone activity near the border. Additionally, stray drones from Ukraine have previously crossed into Baltic airspace; in May, a NATO jet shot down a Ukrainian drone over southern Estonia.
