Brian McDermott has stated his ambition to commit to the England rugby league head coach role through the 2030 World Cup, following his appointment on a short-term basis for the upcoming tournament in Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea.
The 56-year-old, formerly of Leeds Rhinos, confirmed he would like the opportunity to oversee a complete four-year development cycle rather than just the immediate task at hand. While currently balancing the position with his duties as an assistant coach at NRL club Gold Coast Titans, McDermott emphasized the importance of structured long-term planning.
“Clearly, I’d like to do the job for longer. I’d like to get another crack at the World Cup in four years’ time,” McDermott said. “If you’re going to do this properly, give me four years’ preparation, where we’re building it up year by year and getting players connected to a programme which has got a start, a middle and the end.”
Discussions regarding the future of his tenure have been informal so far. McDermott acknowledged the chaotic nature of preparing for the tournament with minimal lead-in time, noting that England faces Tonga in their opener in Perth on October 17 without any prior matches. Despite these constraints, he expressed confidence that the squad is in good shape.
In addition to setting his sights on 2030, McDermott has finalized his coaching staff, confirming that Wigan legend Sean O’Loughlin and St Helens icon Paul Wellens will serve as assistant coaches. He also reaffirmed George Williams as the team captain. The Warrington half-back, who is set to return to the NRL to join the Dolphins after the World Cup, recently returned from a four-month neck injury layoff.
McDermott praised Williams’ leadership and maturity, stating, “I’m really pleased to see the form that he’s in now… So he’ll be the captain.”
Williams back from injury? Good news. Just hope the neck issue doesn’t flare up in Perth against Tonga.
