In a recent discussion on France 24, Carys Garland hosted Dr. Andrew Smith, a historian of modern France and lecturer in liberal arts at Queen Mary University of London. Addressing the current political climate, Smith contended that Marine Le Pen and the National Rally’s strong showing in early presidential polls should not be interpreted as a foregone conclusion for the far right.
Smith noted that the party’s success is driven by their cohesion, recognizable branding, and sharply targeted communication strategies. However, he looked beyond these tactical advantages to examine the underlying voter sentiment.
According to Smith, the polling data reveals a French electorate deeply influenced by anger, economic insecurity, anxiety, and a sense of political exhaustion. Rather than characterizing this divide merely as increasing polarization, he suggested the term “fragmentation” offers a more accurate and insightful description of the nation’s political reality.
Highlighting the need for structural change, Smith argued that amidst this fragmentation, there is a pressing case to be made for the adoption of participatory democracy.
