Weak Enforcement Allows Restricted Chemicals in Consumer Goods, Says Lawyer

PFAS pollution has become pervasive, with these highly persistent substances identified in water supplies, soil, food, consumer goods, and even within the human body. According to Hélène Duguy, a senior environmental lawyer at ClientEarth, the dangers associated with these chemicals are now well documented, and viable alternatives exist for many applications.

Duguy emphasizes that an extensive regulatory framework is already in place to address these risks. However, she contends that the primary obstacle is not insufficient scientific knowledge or legislation, but rather weak enforcement, sluggish regulatory processes, and resistance from corporations. Consequently, hazardous chemicals continue to circulate in the market despite existing restrictions.
