The Kansas City Chiefs started their NFL campaign with a dominant 31-10 victory over the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium. The win marked a strong return to form for the Chiefs, who have not lost the AFC West title since the Broncos claimed it last season, snapping Kansas City’s streak of nine consecutive divisional championships.
Patrick Mahomes, returning to the field for the first time since sustaining a knee injury in December, led the offensive charge. He scored the opening touchdown on the ground and threw for two additional scores, guiding the Chiefs to a statement win.
New acquisition Kenneth Walker, the most valuable player for the Seattle Seahawks during last season’s Super Bowl run, was the standout performer. Joining the Chiefs on a three-year contract reportedly valued at up to $45m, Walker rushed for a career-high 173 yards and crossed the end zone twice in his debut.
“I’ve been saying it all off-season that K9 is going to make a difference,” Mahomes said. “That offensive line and K9, they took over the game. It went really well.”
Denver briefly tied the game in the first quarter, but Broncos quarterback Bo Nix struggled thereafter, being sacked four times and throwing one interception as Kansas City pulled away. Meanwhile, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce moved into second place on the NFL’s all-time receiving yards list for his position, gaining a 59-yard yardage boost. Only former Chiefs star Tony Gonzalez, with 15,127 yards, holds more career receiving yards than Kelce’s current total of 13,073.
The game drew high-profile spectators, with singer Taylor Swift and actor Tom Cruise watching together from the stands. Swift is married to Kelce.
Bo Nix struggled mightily here. Four sacks and an interception don’t inspire confidence for Denver’s young quarterback.
A 21-point victory to end a nine-year division streak? This feels like a statement season for Kansas City.
I’m surprised the Chiefs offense looked this synchronized so early. Mahomes seems back to his MVP form.
Did anyone else notice Tom Cruise was in the stands with Swift and Kelce? That’s a movie premiere, not just a football game.
173 yards in his first game with KC? Kenneth Walker is already a legend. What a signing!
