Sanctuary officials report that thousands of olive ridley turtles have converged on La Escobilla beach in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca to lay their eggs. The event, which took place over a 48-hour period, highlights the ongoing nesting season that began in March.
This gathering represents the sixth wave of the species during the current season. The phenomenon is widely recognized as “la arribada,” or “the arrival,” a natural occurrence where hundreds of thousands of these marine reptiles swim ashore simultaneously to reproduce.
The mass nesting draws significant attention to conservation efforts in the region, as officials monitor the safety of the eggs and the return of the juvenile turtles to the ocean.
