Stephen Root Claims Emmy for ‘Widow’s Bay,’ Setting Age Record in Comedy Supporting Actor Category

Stephen Root has secured the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance as Wyck in Apple TV+’s “Widow’s Bay.” The victory marks Root’s first Emmy win.

In achieving this honor, Root also broke a long-standing age record in the category. At the time of the win, he surpassed Henry Winkler by two years as the oldest actor to receive the award. Winkler had held the title after winning at age 72 for his role as Gene Cousineau in “Barry,” a victory that came 42 years after his initial nomination for “Happy Days.” Root himself received a nomination for his role as Monroe Fuches in “Barry” in 2019, following the year Winkler won.

Root faced stiff competition from a distinguished lineup of nominees, including Colman Domingo for “The Four Seasons,” Paul W. Downs for “Hacks,” Harrison Ford and Michael Urie, both for “Shrinking,” Nick Offerman for “Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” and Tyler James Williams for “Abbott Elementary.” His co-star, Kate O’Flynn, also celebrated a milestone victory, winning the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. The win represents O’Flynn’s first Emmy and came on her initial nomination.

The awards come on the heels of a highly successful season for “Widow’s Bay.” After its premiere in April, the series experienced a significant breakout, leading to a renewal for a second season by June. During last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies, the show captured eight awards, with Root’s recent triumph bringing the total to nine. The series remains in contention tonight, with nominations in 10 additional categories, including Outstanding Comedy Series, directing, casting, writing, and lead actor for Matthew Rhys.

  1. Wait, Harrison Ford was nominated for a comedy? I need to watch Shrinking immediately to understand what happened there.
