Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda announced via social media platform X that the aircraft had been brought down shortly after midnight. He stated, “A drone that just entered Lithuanian airspace was destroyed by NATO fighter jets.” Authorities noted that the drone likely crossed into the southern part of Lithuania, near the city of Kaunas, from Belarus, a close ally of Moscow.
While the origin of the unmanned aircraft remains under investigation, a spokesperson for the Lithuanian national crisis management centre confirmed that details regarding its source are not yet available. Earlier in the day, drone alerts were activated across the capital, Vilnius, and surrounding areas.
President Nausėda emphasized the importance of vigilance given the broader geopolitical context. “With Russia intensifying its aggression against Ukraine, such readiness is vital for our region. Together with our NATO Allies, Lithuania will defend its airspace,” he wrote.
