Google Drive Users Can Now Use Gemini to Auto-Organize Files

Google has introduced a new tool for Google Drive that leverages its Gemini AI to assist users in tidying up their cloud storage. The feature, known as “Organize My Files,” was initially tested last fall and began a broader rollout to Workspace customers in June, addressing long-standing complaints about the platform’s search capabilities and organizational tools.

According to Google, the AI analyzes a user’s existing folder structure and organizing strategies to propose specific locations for loose files. The process is interactive: users open Google Drive on the web, navigate to “My Drive,” and click “Suggest file moves.” A new window displays a list of proposed actions, which the user can approve individually using checkboxes. While Gemini can suggest the creation of new folders, it does not rename files, meaning its effectiveness depends heavily on whether documents already have descriptive titles.

Access to this functionality requires a paid subscription. It is available to users with Google AI Pro or AI Ultra plans, priced at $20 per month for the AI Pro tier, which also includes 5TB of storage and a YouTube Premium Lite subscription. The feature is also included for Business, Enterprise, and Education Workspace accounts; however, these organizational tools are restricted to private folders and cannot be used for shared files or to organize personal documents within a workplace account.

Before using the tool, users must ensure that “Smart features in Google Workspace” is enabled. This setting is active by default in most regions, but can be verified in Gmail under Settings and Manage Workspace smart feature settings. Google notes that because the AI does not read the actual content of documents, it may struggle to organize untitled or unnamed files. For users with poorly labeled documents, manual organization remains necessary, though Gemini can help maintain order for future uploads.
