Apple has officially launched iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 on September 14, bringing a suite of updates focused on stability, artificial intelligence, and user customization. While the release does not feature the sweeping visual redesign seen in the previous version, it introduces substantial quality-of-life improvements, headlined by a major upgrade to the Siri assistant.
The new operating systems are compatible with iPhones released in 2019 and later, including the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd generation). This means all devices that supported iOS 6 remain eligible for the update. For iPads, compatibility varies by model: the 9th-generation iPad and newer, iPad Mini 6th generation and later, iPad Air 11-inch 4th generation and later, iPad Air 13-inch with M2 or later chips, and all iPad Pro models from the 2nd generation onward, with the exception of the 8th-generation iPad (2020) and 5th-generation iPad Mini.
The most prominent feature in iOS 27 is the evolution of Siri. Powered by third-generation foundation models developed with Google’s Gemini technology, the assistant now features a new glass-orb interface and a dedicated app for managing conversation history. Users can interact with Siri via voice or text, and the assistant is now integrated directly into the camera app, enabling visual searches similar to Google Lens. Additionally, Siri can analyze personal context—such as emails, messages, and photos—to draft responses, suggest wine pairings, or split restaurant bills.
Apple also emphasizes platform stability and performance. The company reports that app launches are up to 30 percent faster, photo library loading times have improved by 70 percent, and AirDrop transfers are up to 80 percent quicker. Enhanced network handling should reduce downtime when switching between Wi-Fi and cellular data. These efficiency gains are attributed to a better-optimized CPU scheduler, benefiting older devices like the iPhone 11.
Users of the Liquid Glass design language now have more control over its appearance. A new slider in Settings allows users to adjust the intensity of the transparent effect, ranging from fully clear to more opaque. The update also includes refined parental controls, such as “Ask to Browse” for website approval, blurred content warnings for messages and FaceTime, and granular time allowances for app categories based on child age.
For photography, the Photos app receives Apple Intelligence features including an enhanced Clean Up tool, an Extend feature for generating content around image borders, and Spatial Reframing to adjust perspective. However, these AI-driven tools are restricted to iPhone 15 Pro models and newer, as well as select iPads with compatible hardware.
To install the update, users are advised to back up their devices via iCloud before navigating to Settings, General, and Software Update. Once installed, Siri will request permission to index device data, a process that may take several hours to a few days to complete.
