Superhuman has acquired Fathom, the Y Combinator-backed meeting notetaker, as part of a broader strategy to embed agentic AI capabilities into its productivity ecosystem. Rather than developing an internal solution from scratch, the company opted to purchase the established tool to accelerate integration with its existing suite.
Fathom, launched in 2020, has attracted over $30 million in funding and reached a $94 million valuation in 2024, according to PitchBook data. Its investor roster includes Zoom Apps Fund, Telescope Partners, BoxOne Ventures, Maven Ventures, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear, and Cruise co-founder Kyle Vogt. The platform currently reports more than 400,000 monthly active users and has facilitated over one million recorded meetings to date.
Shishir Mehrotra, CEO of Superhuman, revealed that the company had previously tested an internal notetaker with select users earlier this year. However, the trial highlighted the technical complexity involved in creating a robust meeting product. “We’ve been working internally on this area for a while as well. I think it greatly increased our confidence in the demand in this category. It also becomes very clear how deep the products in this category are and how much you need to build,” Mehrotra told TechCrunch. He noted that while many tools make meeting recording appear seamless, executing all aspects flawlessly is significantly more difficult.
The acquisition places Superhuman in direct competition with other fast-growing notetaker startups such as Granola, Read AI, and Wispr, all of which have secured substantial venture funding. Despite this competitive pressure, Fathom CEO Richard White highlighted the strategic advantage of joining a larger platform. “The reach of Superhuman is massive. If we were to operate Fathom as a standalone company, we would have to build a lot of things that are already in the Superhuman platform,” White said, pointing to Superhuman’s 40 million user base as a key distribution channel.
With the addition of Fathom, Superhuman aims to enhance its already extensive toolkit, which includes an email client, documents app, calendar, database solution, and a recently launched AI agent builder. The integration is expected to allow the platform to automatically draft emails, update data entries, schedule follow-ups, and enable AI agents to extract insights and initiate workflows based on meeting context in real time.
