A Century Later: Why Paul Kammerer’s Controversial Science Deserves a Second Look

A century has passed since zoologist Paul Kammerer took his own life on a plateau near Vienna on September 23, 1926. Found slumped against a rock by a retired railway worker tracking the barking of his dogs, Kammerer’s death sent shockwaves through the scientific community. At the time, he was hailed as a potential successor to Charles Darwin by The New York Times, yet his passing occurred just weeks after US herpetologist Gladwyn Noble published findings in Nature accusing Kammerer of tampering with his most celebrated experiments.

For decades, the fraud allegations and the circumstances of his suicide led many to dismiss his entire body of work. However, new perspectives emerging a hundred years later suggest that Kammerer’s ideas merit serious reconsideration, particularly regarding the inheritance of acquired characteristics.

Kammerer’s personal life was as turbulent as his scientific career. Born in Vienna in 1880 to an optical instruments manufacturer and a pianist, he studied both biology and musicology. Known for his charm and integrity, he was also vain and had a complex romantic history involving famous figures such as composer Alban Berg, soprano Helene Nahowska, and Alma Mahler-Werfel, the widow of Gustav Mahler.

Scientifically, Kammerer challenged the prevailing orthodoxy of August Weismann, who argued that traits acquired during an organism’s lifetime could not be inherited. While Weismann demonstrated this by severing mouse tails over five generations, Kammerer presented evidence to the contrary through his work with amphibians and other animals.

His most famous experiments involved the midwife toad (Alytes obstetricans). By raising these terrestrial toads in water, Kammerer induced the development of nuptial pads—features typically found only in water-dwelling species. He claimed these changes were passed to subsequent generations, suggesting a two-way interaction between an organism’s environment and its genes.

Other studies included sea squirts growing longer siphons after amputation and cave-dwelling olms retaining larval eyes when exposed to specific light wavelengths. Kammerer was not a Lamarckian purist; he accepted the role of genes and natural selection but argued for a more dynamic evolutionary process where environmental pressures could permanently influence genetic expression.

The backlash was swift and severe. Prominent geneticists, including William Bateson, publicly attacked Kammerer’s methods. The accusations intensified after Noble examined Kammerer’s remaining specimens in Vienna in early 1926, leading to the fraud claims that precipitated the zoologist’s suicide.

Despite the stigma, modern science is beginning to find validity in some of Kammerer’s hypotheses. Discoveries in epigenetics and developmental biology over the last century have shown that environmental factors can indeed influence gene expression and, in some cases, affect offspring. This shift invites a re-evaluation of Kammerer’s legacy, separating the alleged fraud from the genuine insights his careful observations may have provided.
