German federal prosecutors have formally charged a 57-year-old Berlin businesswoman with conducting intelligence activities on behalf of Russia. The suspect, identified as Ilona W., holds both German and Ukrainian citizenship and works in the marketing sector.
According to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, W. is accused of working for the intelligence service of a foreign power. Authorities allege that she leveraged her political and military connections to assist a Russian intelligence officer, who was based at the Russian Embassy in Berlin, in gaining access to influential circles. The alleged goal was to obtain information regarding German defense policy.
W. was taken into custody on January 21 and has remained in pre-trial detention since her arrest. The case continues to develop as legal proceedings unfold.
Germany needs stricter vetting for anyone touching sensitive diplomatic or military contacts. Pre-trial detention should be the norm here.
I find it hard to believe this isn’t a politically motivated case ahead of upcoming elections. Need more transparency from prosecutors.
How exactly did she access defense policy circles? Marketing shouldn’t grant that kind of clearance. What were the specific channels used?
This is incredibly surprising. I thought she was a respected community member. Betrayal cuts deeper when it comes from within.
Dual citizenship doesn’t exempt you from German law. Treason is treason, regardless of her passport.
