Ludek Miklosko, the former West Ham United and Czech Republic goalkeeper who became an iconic figure at the club, has died at the age of 64. The announcement was made by West Ham United on September 14, 2026.
Miklosko spent the majority of his career with the Hammers, making nearly 400 appearances between 1990 and 1998. His time at the club also included a stint with Queens Park Rangers and international duty for the Czech Republic national team.
He remained deeply connected to the fans long after his playing days ended. Supporters frequently sang his name in the stands, and he later returned to the club in a coaching capacity as a goalkeeping coach.
Three years after being diagnosed with cancer, Miklosko announced in December 2024 that he was withdrawing from treatment. Shortly thereafter, he made a memorable return to West Ham’s London Stadium to watch a Premier League match against Liverpool, where he received a hero’s reception from the crowd.
In a statement, West Ham United expressed their grief: “It is with deep and profound sadness that West Ham United announces the passing of legendary former goalkeeper and coach, Luděk Miklosko. Rest in peace Ludek, our beloved, inspirational goalkeeper and gentle giant of a man.”
I still remember that standing ovation he received at the London Stadium. That crowd loves him forever. What a class act.
Rest in peace, Ludek. A true gentleman of the game and a loyal servant to West Ham for so many years.
