Android Auto Replaces Google Assistant With Gemini for Smarter Long Drives

Google is currently expanding a major update to Android Auto, replacing the traditional Google Assistant with its AI-powered Gemini model. The rollout aims to reduce driver distraction and streamline the experience for those on extended road trips, where managing navigation, messages, and entertainment can become overwhelming.

Gemini distinguishes itself through conversational fluency and context retention. Unlike previous iterations that required precise voice commands, this new assistant allows users to speak naturally. For instance, if a driver selects a restaurant from a list of options along their route, they can subsequently ask for parking details or reviews without needing to restate the venue’s name, as Gemini remembers the immediate context of the conversation.

The update also introduces significant enhancements for handling communication while driving. When group chats generate multiple notifications, Gemini can summarize the incoming messages rather than reading each one aloud. It is also capable of drafting replies, including estimated times of arrival, and translating text from over 40 languages, allowing drivers to stay connected without touching their phones.

Entertainment controls have similarly become more flexible. Rather than requesting specific tracks or playlists by title, users can ask Gemini to curate music based on mood, such as “something upbeat” or “something mellow.” The assistant integrates with existing music services to fulfill these vague requests. Additionally, by connecting to Gmail, Calendar, and note-taking applications, Gemini can retrieve driving instructions from emails or recite daily schedules.

While Gemini has been available as an optional feature for some time, it is now being set as the default for new interactions in Android Auto. Users who have not yet switched can manually update their preferences by navigating to Settings, selecting Connected devices, choosing Android Auto, and managing their digital assistant to switch from the standard Google Assistant to Gemini.
